VAN DALE DICTIONARY DUTCH SIGN LANGUAGE
On October 8th, the first copy of the first Van Dale Dictionary of the Dutch Sign Language will be presented to Minister Plasterk.
The dictionary contains over 3000 standard signs with illustrations and is unique in Holland: for the first time a well-known publisher of dictionaries has published an extensive Sign Language dictionary with standardized signs.
The dictionary has been put together by the Dutch Sign Language Centre, using our program Salute!.
The suitability of Salute! for rendering sign language in two dimensional drawings makes it an excellent tool to construct large databases for purposes of standardization, dictionaries and research. Any (international) proposals for similar projects can be directed at the Handicom office, which you can find on the contact page.
Salute! is a computerprogram that makes digital communication in sign language possible.
With Salute! you can: draw, learn, write, print and even e-mail in sign language.
The Salute! packkage consists of:

- The Document Maker (with e-mail), to write and e-mail in sign language
- The Paper Chart Maker, to print sign drawings on teaching materials and (communication) charts
- Memory, MultipleChoice en Shuffle: games that can be used for educational purposes, for example to get used to working with sign language in written form
- The Salute! Control Panel, which makes the use and configuration of the Salute! software easy
- The Lees&Teken-database with more than 1200 signs. Note: this database contains signs from the Dutch sign language!

The software modules can be adjusted to everybody's needs. Therefore Salute! is also suitable for people who have difficulty reading and writing alphabetical text, or for whom other computerprograms are too complex.
